You’re driving down the highway. A rock kicks up from the truck ahead and hits your windshield. Now you’ve got a crack spreading across the glass. What do you do?

If you’re like most Saskatchewan drivers, your first instinct is to worry: How much will this cost? Do I need to call SGI? Will it affect my insurance? Is it safe to keep driving?

Here’s the step-by-step answer to all of those questions.

Step 1: Stay Calm and Assess the Damage

Pull over when it’s safe and take a look at the damage. Note the size, location, and type:

Small chip (smaller than a quarter): This can usually be repaired without replacing the windshield. If you have an SGI package policy, the repair is free.

Crack under 15 cm (about 6 inches): May be repairable depending on location. If it’s not in your direct line of sight and hasn’t reached the edge of the glass, repair is possible.

Long crack, spider-web damage, or edge-to-edge cracking: This requires a full Windshield replacement Saskatoon. Don’t delay — the crack will continue to spread.

Step 2: Take a Photo

Before doing anything else, take a clear photo of the damage with your phone. This serves as documentation if you need to file a claim, helps the auto glass shop assess the damage over the phone, and is especially important for door glass and back glass claims where SGI may request photos.

Step 3: Note When It Happened

SGI requires a “date of loss” for all glass claims — the date the damage occurred. This is straightforward if it just happened. If you noticed a crack but aren’t sure exactly when it started, an approximate date works. SGI allows claims up to 2 years from the date of loss, but don’t wait — damage spreads fast in Saskatchewan’s climate.

Step 4: Do NOT Call SGI

This surprises most people, but for windshield damage, you do not need to call SGI. You don’t need to file an eClaim. You don’t need to get a claim number. The auto glass shop handles the entire claim process on your behalf.

SGI’s own documentation instructs customers not to file glass-only claims through eClaim. The shop contacts SGI, verifies your coverage, files the claim, and bills SGI directly. You just provide your registration info and pay your deductible.

The exception: For back glass damage, SGI typically requires you to file a claim and get adjuster approval first. For door glass, a claim may also need to be initiated by you depending on the circumstances. For windshields and stone chips — the most common damage — the shop handles everything.

Step 5: Call an Auto Glass Shop

Call Showtime Auto Glass at (306) 952-3580. Tell us your vehicle info and describe the damage (or text us the photo you took in Step 2). We’ll tell you whether it can be repaired or needs replacement, verify your SGI coverage and deductible, and book your appointment — often for the same day.

Have your vehicle registration card handy. It has the customer number, plate number, and policy number we need to verify your coverage.

Step 6: Get It Fixed

Show up for your appointment (or we come to you via mobile service). Pay your deductible — as low as $50 with a package policy. We replace or repair the glass, handle the SGI claim, and you drive away with a lifetime warranty.

The entire process from first call to driving away typically takes 1–2 business days, with same-day service available for most vehicles.

What NOT to Do

Don’t ignore the damage. Saskatchewan’s freeze-thaw cycles cause cracks to spread rapidly. A repairable chip can become an unrepairable crack within days.

Don’t use a DIY repair kit from a hardware store. These kits rarely provide a lasting fix and can make the damage worse or prevent a professional repair later.

Don’t assume it will be expensive. With an SGI package policy, your deductible is $50–$100. Stone chip Stone chip repair Saskatoonrepairs are free. Most drivers pay far less than they expect.

Don’t avoid filing because you’re worried about your rates. Glass claims from road hazards do not affect your SGI safety rating or premiums. They are not at-fault incidents.
